‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Light therapy is clearly enjoying a moment. Consumers can purchase illuminated devices for everything from complexion problems and aging signs to muscle pain and gum disease, recently introduced is an oral care tool outfitted with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. Based on supporter testimonials, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, stimulating skin elasticity, easing muscle tension, relieving inflammation and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.
Understanding the Evidence
“It feels almost magical,” notes Paul Chazot, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.
Various Phototherapy Approaches
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, like examinations of infrared influence on cerebral tissue, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and infrared light visible through night vision technology.
UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says a skin specialist. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “generally affect surface layers.”
Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance
UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, meaning intensity is regulated,” says Ho. And crucially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Colored light diodes, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, enhance blood flow, oxygen utilization and skin cell regeneration, and promote collagen synthesis – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Studies are available,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”
Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms
At the same time, in advanced research areas, researchers have been testing neural cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, but over 20 years ago, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he recalls. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
The advantage it possessed, however, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is generally advantageous.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. At controlled levels these compounds, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and waste removal – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments
When recently reviewing 1070nm research for cognitive decline, he says, approximately 400 participants enrolled in multiple trials, including his own initial clinical trials in the US
