United Nations Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Before Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council approved to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his Washington trip the coming week.
He was appointed provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of civil war.
Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for backing of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria before he cut connections in 2016.
Previous US Visit
The upcoming meeting does not represent the president's debut journey to America this year. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to address the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
